Return to Chicagoland Youth Speed Lacrosse League

A fast paced, extremely fun, "backyard" version of the best sport on earth. Created by the Powell Brothers, this 3v3 style of play requires no equipment other than your favorite stick. Speed Lacrosse is played with a soft lacrosse ball made of foam on a field that is 40 yards long by 20 yards wide. The goals are 3 feet by 3 feet wide and the offense cannot take "crank shots" or shots past the mid line. Scoring goals focuses less on "shooting" and more on "finishing." Defense is played with one person in net, acting as the goalie, and two defenders in a stacked position. Essentially each offensive possession is a 3v2 matchup. No player, other than the goalie, is allowed to "rake" the ball; every ground ball must be scooped into the stick. If a ball goes out of bounds on a pass or shot, it is awarded to the other team; there is no need to chase a shot. Any ball that goes out of play must be passed inbounds, much like how play restarts in basketball.  If a goal is scored, the goalie must circle around the goal before the ball is back in play, this allows the defense time to get back into position. The amount of contact allowed is much like basketball as well, light pushing and holding your ground is allowed but penalties will be called for anything deemed excessive by the referee. There is absolutely no stick checking. In the case where a penalty is called there is a penalty shot. The person who caused the penalty is required to play goalie while the person who had the penalty committed to them will take a continuous penalty shot. Like in hockey, the player must stay in motion toward the goal when taking the shot. It is illegal to step back or stop your feet when taking a penalty shot. Each game will be 22 minutes long and the clock will not stop for any reason. In close games, stalling will be emphasized by the referees in the last 7 minutes of the game. If you have the ball you must make an effort to score a goal, if the referee feels you are trying to bleed time off the clock, they will call a stalling penalty and a penalty shot will be awarded.

When registering, you are registering a team in this league. Team names must be appropriate, but can be a name you create. Teams must be a minimum of 5 people and a maximum of 8 people. Players should bring a reversable pinnie so teams can be identified. You must enter the first name, last name, and birth year of each player on your roster. Players may not be double rostered, but we will consider loaning players to other teams if the roster is light on game day. This is a 3 week league with the 4th week consisting of the championship tournament. There will be an award for the winning team in each division.
